The South African student uprisings of 1976 shifted the anti-apartheid struggle. No doubt, that that generation of students should be commemorated and acknowledged.
However, Youth Day and Youth Month have become increasingly hollow rituals, as South Africa's young people bear the brunt of many crises. Youth Day has become a chance for old politicians to make vain promises to young citizens. Well, that's what it feels like to me.
