Breaking into the elite sports industry as a young strength and conditioning coach or sport scientist is tough as it is. There's limited positions available and the competition for employment is fierce. That's without a pandemic. With COVID-19 throwing sports around the globe into chaos, young strength and conditioning coaches and sports scientists are finding it increasingly difficult to pay the bills. Young practitioners usually require casual employment around their studies or a series of casual jobs to make ends meet. For undergraduate exercise and sport science students, the final years of study usually require the completion of internships to be eligible to graduate. This process has been made a whole lot harder by the COVID-19 pandemic. Young practitioners may have seen their career progression stalled by a pandemic where they cannot complete internships or placements in person and are left to resort to online coaching. Coaching repetitions are needed in person rather than online, so it's a tough predicament to be in at the moment. There's only so much you can do to build your skills behind a screen. Young coaches may feel like their career progress may have been delayed in an already highly competitive industry. We undoubtedly sympathise. In this episode of the TRIAX10, Damo and Rob talk about the mental health difficulties and challenges faced by young practitioners given the current COVID-19 landscape. The boys also share their thoughts on what those impacted can do to continue to build their skillset.
Highlights:
- Damo navigates the current landscape for young sport science students and the likely challenges they are currently experiencing.
- The difficulties surrounding casual employment during COVID lockdowns
- The mindset and concern for young practitioners
