SESSION ONE
Defining anxiety and depression
- Anxiety: apprehension, uneasiness of mind, usually over an impending or anticipated threat or danger – Philippians 4:6
- Causes: response to stimuli in a person’s environment or internal stimulus
- Normal fear: emotional response to real or perceived imminent threat
- Reactions: surges of autonomic arousal necessary for fight or flight
PSYCHOLOGICAL ANXIETY
- Some experts see Anxiety as an exposure of vulnerability (perception of being subject to internal or external dangers against which he has an inadequate ability to protect himself);
- Clinical syndromes, magnifies the sense of vulnerability into a cognitive processing dysfunction.
DEPRESSION Defined
- A state where the heart is pressed down and unable to experience joy
- An umbrella description of feeling from discouragement to despair
Psychological DEPRESSION
- Defined: despondence and dejection, accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy
- Causes: chemical imbalance, genetic predisposition, negative thoughts and habits
