Matthew 7:21-23
One of the most frightening passages in all of Scripture in Matthew 7:21–23. Jesus tells his disciples that not everyone who says to him ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven. Many will even say that they prophesied, cast out demons, and did many mighty works in his name. There is no indication in the text that those claims are false. They likely did do all those things and they even did them in Jesus’ name and yet they still fell short of entering the kingdom. It is important they we understand what Jesus is teaching in this text lest we hear those dreadful words on that day, “I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.”
