American Horror Story popularized the anthology series format and made the miniseries cool for maybe the first time ever. It also brought horror to television screens in a way that hadn’t ever been seen before, with a diverse cast of characters that broke stereotypes of what a horror hero looks like. The show challenged standards of what was acceptable to show on TV (as Cody says, “It’s a total butt-fest.”) while also paying homage to long-standing horror traditions in it’s gimmicky marketing.
