Matthew 8:18–22

The cost of discipleship has been a somewhat controversial topic in the modern church. How can there be a cost when salvation is free? Salvation is by grace alone through faith which is the opposite of works. If salvation is by grace and not by works, how can there be a cost? These questions and those like them don’t seem to bother Matthew or Jesus. Jesus was quick to point out the cost of following him. But that does not mean that he believed in salvation by enduring the costs of discipleship. Instead, for Jesus and Matthew true faith involves recognizing Jesus’ worth. How great is Jesus in your estimation? The answer to that question will determine the genuineness of your faith and your ability to bear the cost of being a disciple.
