The President of the European Commission says the EU cannot and will not allow EU common values to be put at risk because of rule of law transgressions in Poland.
In a debate in the European Parliament this morning, Ursula von der Leyen said a recent judicial ruling in Poland was deeply concerning.
Ursula von der Leyen said the European Commission would act to impose a range of options including infringement actions, financial sanctions and the triggering of a procedure that could strip Poland of EU membership rights.
Earlier this month Poland’s constitutional tribunal found that EU treaties were incompatible with Poland’s national constitution. The ruling’s caused outcry in many EU circles.
