Velocity based training (VBT) has been simply put as an objective method of analyzing the intensity of a particular exercise. VBT has grown to prominence and can be used to evaluate how well an athlete performed an exercise (e.g., Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press) and even used as a prescription tool for reps and sets.
There's a lot of confusion surrounding the term VBT and even the name might not be that accurate to reflect what velocity based training actually is. We can think of VBT as a method that uses the velocity of movement to guide training. But instead of speculating about VBT, we thought we'd get an expert in to explain VBT with us (and also talk about their brilliant new app).
It's only taken a year, but the TRIAX boys have their first special guest on the DeakHeads podcast...
Jacob Tober, a strength and conditioning coach and sport scientist was gracious enough to come on the DeakHeads podcast to talk all things Velocity based training (VBT). Jacob is the head of research and education at Metric, a revolutionary velocity based training app. Metric enables lifters and coaches to accurately track velocity, range of motion and power using just their smartphone camera. Jacob has also worked as a strength and conditioning coach at Core Advantage Athletic Development since 2013.
In this podcast the TRIAX boys and Jacob discuss:
- What is Velocity Based Training
- Velocity based training explained
- How VBT can be used in preseason and in-season
- How VBT can be incorporated into the gym program
- Using VBT alongside other markers of athlete readiness/wellness (e.g., RPE)
- Preparing for your preseason on the back of the COVID hiatus
- The Metric App: how it can be used to incorporate VBT into your program and help you as a coach/athlete
