Stand Firm In your Faith
Part III
Text: Ephesians 6:1-20 (vs 16-17)
Thesis: God has been calling believers to “Stand Firm” from the beginning and not to
panic and run.
Stand Firm in your Faith!

4. The Shield of Faith (vs. 16)
A. The Apostle Paul teaches the Christian is under attack from Satan.
*Jesus proclaims: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and
have it to the full (John 10:10).”
*Peter warns: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls
around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).”
B. Peter knows this first hand because he fell victim to Satan’s attack even after Jesus warned
him.
*“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat (Luke 22:31).”
C. The faith that Paul is referring to is a total faith in Christ for your
salvation and a daily reliance upon Christ as your Lord. Jesus wants to be your Lord and Savior!
D. A Christian’s ultimate security is not in self, others, the government,
or human resources for their protection.
5. The Helmet of Salvation (vs. 17a)
A. This piece of military armor is created to protect the head which is a vital part of the human
body.
* “But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the
duties of your ministry (2 Timothy 4:5).”
* “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing and
perfect will (Romans 12:2).”
* “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the
word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).”
6. The Sword of the Spirit (vs. 17b)
A. The phrase “Sword of the Spirit” has been translated two ways:
1. It is the voice of God speaking to your mind through the Holy Spirit.
* “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the
truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and
he will tell you what is yet to come (John 16:13).”
B. It is the written Word of God, the Bible.
* “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking,
correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every
good work (2 Timothy 3:17).”
* “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any
double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts
and attitudes of the heart
(Hebrews 4:12).”
* “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own
interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human,
spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21).”
