Introduction to Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion: James Albert Keating on Opportunity
Here we meet James Albert Keating, Master at Arms, discussing the importance of opportunity and daring in life, as an act of freewill. Remember, as usually understood, freewill is the idea that we can literally do differently than we actually do; real alternative possibilities. This is why we say to both heroes and fiends and well as of ordinary actions in ordinary life, “you didn’t have to do what you did”. Because it’s true. They did not. The ideas of courage and wickedness presuppose, as they are usually understood, this ability to do other than what you actually did. This ability becomes critical in the realm of opportunity and in the deeper, metaphysical interpretations of events. There are lots of opportunities and lots of lost of opportunities. Don’t lose yours!
And Keating insists: Always enquire, look for, metaphysical, even spiritual, meanings behind the obvious.
Cheers~
