Episode 1.10 - Creating a Sense of Belonging

What is the Sense of Belonging at School?  We hear admin and teachers speak of our “School Family”, but does that truly include the students?  Is it truly inclusive of everyone?  What does that phrase really mean?  

 

What do we do to ensure all members of our community feel included, wanted, welcome, and contributing?  How are all voices heard and respected?  

 

What is it we do?  What can we do better?  

 

How do we help students feel safe?   - this can be seen from all sides.  Do you feel safe with your students?  This is integral!  If you believe they should feel safe, then so should you - what is holding you back from being authentic?  This does not mean you need to be an open-book, but that you are accessible to ALL students.  

 

What is the buy-in? How does “Stealth Learning” come into play for you?

Here is a diagram of the factors/Themes of Sense of Belonging in School, per a 2007-17 study on At-Risk Students.  These students expressed mainly variables such as family, mental health, trauma, and poverty that impacted a student’s SOBAS.
