SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Sparked by recent events in the summer blockbuster lineup, we talk about the risks of marketing your work with too much focus on the bells and whistles. We discover that artistry and industry have a fascinating meeting point where they both agree. Audiences seem too as well.
POINT #1: "COME SEE THE SPECTACLE!!!"
- There's nothing wrong with a little razzle dazzle in art. In fact, it's necessary. But if you're trying to market and sell your work purely on this alone, it gets dicey. There are so very few names and situations in which this can work effectively that it's best to not rely on.
POINT #2: “STORY FOR THE WIN"
- No matter what kinds of effects, names, budget etc you have at your disposal, none of it takes the place of a good story. In any artistic work, there is always a story to be told. When we strip it down to nothing but aesthetics and sizzle, everyone is left wanting.
POINT #3: “WHAT AM I EATING?"
- Spectacle is a lot like the spice and presentation of food. No doubt it's important and can add flavour, but we need to know what we're actually consuming. Is it chicken? Is it fish? Is it beef? Wait, it's a pasta?! The core component needs to be there in order to make everything else relevant.
