During the 1970s energy crisis, Carmichael promoted a prototype for a low-cost fuel-efficient car via Twentieth Century Motor Car Corporation. The only problem? The prototype, unbeknownst to the investors, was propped up with 2x4s, door hinges to keep the doors in place, as well as having a detached accelerator. When authorities went to check the “factory” everything was completely gone. Ole Carmichael fled with investor money. Approximately $2/3 million dollars.
