Matthew 9:14–17
What do whining disciples, a wedding, a worn garment, and a wineskin have in common? Good question! In Matthew 9:14–17 Jesus answers the question, “Why do your disciples not fast?” His answer involves the picture of a wedding and two parables showing that the ‘new’ doesn’t work together well with the ‘old.’ The whole thing teaches that we must understand the times. The disciples of John the baptist needed to understand that something new was happening in the ministry of Jesus. We also need to understand that same truth as well as what is happening in our own day.
