157 - Joe Anderson Talks Dam Removal and Fisheries Recovery on Washington’s Elwha River
On this episode, Anders Halverson talks to Dr. Joe Anderson of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife about fish restoration in the Elwha River, the site of one of the biggest and most significant dam removal projects in the United States. Since the dams were removed in 2014, salmon, steelhead, bull trout, and other fish have recolonized and adapted to habitat that had not been available to them for more than a century. Research on the changes in fish distribution and abundance, genetics, and life histories have already yielded several surprises and show just how resilient such systems can be.
