There are African women who are out of sight that we have forgotten as a society. These are women who are in detention or incarceration. Fortunately, there are advocates who are diligently working to reduce the number of women who have to go to prison. Today you shall meet one such woman who is leading the charge in this work across the African continent.
Lydia Winyi Kembabazi is a Ugandan lawyer who has had the privilege to serve in different capacities managing legal programmes across the African continent and is now an Advocacy Officer at IHRDA in The Gambia, leading legal reform advocacy projects across Africa. Her Pan African human rights work experience is cross cutting including legal and policy reform advocacy but is particularly passionate about criminal justice reform, refugee and asylum seeker protection, women and children’s rights especially for those in detention.
We discussed:
- Police Reform
- Advocacy at the community level by engaging local influencers
- Archaic laws dating back to colonial times
- Challenges women face when engaged by law officers
