If you know anything about cults, you know about Jonestown. “Don’t drink the kool-aid,” is a phrase that’s used commonly even by people who couldn’t call Jonestown by name. The story is more twisted, dark, and just more crazy than any of us could imagine.
"Jonestown", was a remote settlement in Guyana, established by the Peoples Temple, a San Francisco–based cult under the leadership of the man we will be talking about for this entire episode, Jim Jones. The settlement became internationally known when, on November 18, 1978, a total of 909 people died at the settlement, at a nearby airstrip, and at a Temple-run building in Georgetown, Guyana's capital city.
In total, 918 individuals died in Jonestown, all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, in an event termed "revolutionary suicide" by Jones and some Peoples Temple members on an audio tape of the event, and in prior recorded discussions.
