The President of the European Commission says she truly hopes the Kremlin will decide not to unleash further violence in Europe.
In a speech to the European Parliament this morning, Ursula von der Leyen said Russia sent conflicting signals yesterday. On the one hand Russian authorities announced troop pullbacks from the Ukrainian border. But on the other hand she said, the Russian Parliament voted for the formal recognition of two breakaway Ukrainian republics as independent states.
However, President von der Leyen told MEPs, diplomacy had not yet spoken its last words.
