Two of the most important questions of our faith are Who is Jesus and Who are we? These questions are so crucial that if we get the answers correct, we have life pretty much figured out. But if we get the answers incorrect, we ride an emotional roller coaster where life never makes sense. We often find our identity wrapped up in the preferences, polarization, and politics around us. How can we lift our eyes above the noise to focus on Jesus instead?
Christ told his first followers to come and see! He calls us as well to come and see, think, follow, change, and wonder. We can do just that by focusing on the words Jesus uses to define and describe himself. John records seven statements that Jesus makes concerning his identity, the seven I Ams calling back to God’s words to Moses, “I am who I am!” in Exodus 3:14. These I Ams are not primarily definitions, but rather descriptions of who and what Jesus is in relation to human beings. It is only in union with him that believers receive his salvation and are reminded that Christ is needed for us to have life.
