Featured in TIR Episode 236 (Part 1 of 2): Stix Hooper, founding drummer, and last surviving member of what in my mind is the greatest jazz-funk fusion band of all time – the Crusaders!
Originally known as the Jazz Crusaders, along with other primary members Joe Sample on keys, Wilton Felder on sax and bass, and Wayne Henderson on trombone, the group released more than 30 albums between 1961 and the early 1980s that were loaded with brilliant soulful and funky jazz fusion.
Having also recorded solo albums, Stix has worked with myriad stars through the years like Qunicy Jones, B.B. King, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Nancy Wilson, Grover Washington Jr., Marvin Gaye and Eric Clapton. Now in his seventh decade of music-making, he remains quite active – having last November begun hosting the radio show, “Lay It on the Line” on KKJZ radio in L.A., and he was due to release new music this spring.
