Frank’s friend Kira Cupp is filling in for Kathryn Frady again today. Kira teases Frank by whispering ASMR style.
The first time Frank came to Knoxville was on the Tuesday before Easter in 2002. That night he attended an Einstein Simplified comedy improv show. He came to town to do an on-air audition with Phil Williams. During the audition, he did a bit that involved putting as many Marshmallow Peeps in his mouth as possible.
Kira challenges Frank to do a monologue based on the word “venue.” Frank tells the story of working at Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts until it burned down. He got a job in radio and needed to draw a crowd to a venue called The Wax Museum. He invited friends from Wolf Trap, one of whom brought along Jere, which is how Frank met his wife.
Frank asks Kira to do a monologue on jelly beans. She cannot eat jelly beans because she is now a vegan. Before she was vegan, her family gave her a game called BeanBoozled, which involves nasty-flavored jelly beans.
Marshmallows are not vegan-friendly because they contain gelatin. Kosher marshmallows are made with fish gelatin instead of the kind that comes from farm-animal collagen. Frank realizes that Kira can’t eat the fig jam that he and Jere make because it contains Jell-O.
Kira says it’s hard to find a house because so many people are moving here and prices are going up. Frank says Knoxville is much less crowded than Northern Virginia. Kira might like to buy an older house.
When Frank had his roof replaced, the crew discovered that the old roof didn’t have a proper roof vent and had multiple layers of shingles.
Kira points out that more and more people work from home. Frank works from home in multiple spaces. He records the podcast by the fireplace but edits it in the den. He records his radio voice-tracks in the kitchen so that he can stand up.
Kira asks how Frank can talk so fast and challenges him to recite a tongue-twister. He says, “I slit a sheet, a sheet I slit. Upon a slitted sheet I sit.”
Frank invited Kira to co-host after she sent him a picture of a little fig tree that she and her parents purchased. Frank may have sent Kira too much information about growing figs. Frank is propagating dozens of fig cuttings both in his yard and in flower pots on the porch.
