Today's Battle Drill Devotional: Take Time to Gaze into the Eyes of God
And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. (Revelation 22:4)
Read Revelation 22:1-6. Richard Rohr, the American Franciscan priest, and writer says that if you want to know how God looks at you, then look into your dog’s eyes. He has a point!
Sabbath gives us time to gaze into God’s eyes. To contemplate his love for us. He remains the central focus. Sabbath includes worship with God’s people, which is why Sunday remains the ideal time for Sabbath-keeping, if possible.
As we gather as God’s people in his presence, we get just a glimpse of that glorious eternal party of music, food and beauty that awaits us when we are Promoted to Glory and arrive in heaven. Then we will forever gaze into the face of God. Observing Sabbath together puts our short, earthly lives into perspective as we look forward to the day when God’s Kingdom is fully consummated.
Our lives are a preparation for this day. Similarly, we need to prepare for our Sabbath. How do we prepare for worship on a Sunday? What do we do to help us receive from the Word of God? What time do we need to go to bed the night before?
If, at the end of this week together, you decide to begin practising stopping, resting, delighting, and contemplating for one 24-hour period every week, I promise you will soon discover those same qualities in the other six days of the week. May you have the courage to embrace God’s command and gift of one “no obligation day” every week.
