Yom Haʿatzmaut (Hebrew: יום העצמאות Independence Day) is a time set by the State of Israel in the second half of the 20th century to celebrate the establishment of the state.
The celebration usually takes place on 5 iyar (between mid-April and mid-May of the Gregorian calendar depending on the year). Initially modeled on the national holidays of Europe and Independence Day, it has taken on a more religious message for some, as Israel's independence is seen as a miracle worthy of praise, along the lines of Hanukkah and Purim.
It is observed by the entire Israeli Jewish population, with the exception of a part of the haredi sector that challenges the legitimacy of the Zionist project.
