‘The British response is one of the most controversial parts of its imperial history. They would now engage in warfare against the civilian population, burning thousands of farm houses, destroying crops and slaughtering animals.. Both Boer and Black Women and children were removed from their burnt out homes and placed in concentration camps. Conditions were so squalid that up to fifty thousand of them perished.’
