In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Benita Alexander. Benita Alexander is an award-winning investigative television producer, showrunner, correspondent, director, writer and narrator who has worked on a wide variety of film and TV programs. She is also the CEO of Berraca Productions, a company she founded to further her advocacy work empowering women who are the survivors of love fraud. Benita is the Executive Producer of the documentary film, “He Lied About Everything,” which premiered in the U.S. on Valentine’s Day, 2018 on Investigation Discovery, and continues to be broadcast around the world. This very personal film, which Benita narrates herself, documents how her fairytale romance with a world-renowned surgeon turns into a nightmare. When Benita discovers that her fiance is not who he claims to be, she goes on an emotional journey to unravel a trail of destruction that leaves patients dead and their shattered families in shock. In 2019, the film was nominated in the documentary category for the WIN Awards, Women's Image Network. Benita’s story of remarkable resilience and bravery in exposing the lying surgeon she thought she would spend the rest of her life with has since been featured in numerous national and international television, radio shows and podcasts. In October, 2020, it was the premiere episode of ABC's primetime series, "The Con," hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. In February, 2021, it was featured as a two-hour special “True Lies” on ABC’s “20/20.” It has also been featured on BBC’s “Outlook” podcast, and is currently the focus of the third season of the hit Wondery podcast “Dr. Death,” with 7 episodes under the title “Dr. Death: Miracle Man." Benita now uses her personal story of survival to help other women who have been victimized. Too often women feel alone, stupid, and humiliated after realizing they've been conned and Benita is on a mission to end that shame. In this episode we discuss journalism, the art of storytelling, love conned, Berraca, advocacy work, support and community.
