Matthew 12:9–14
Jesus has declared himself “Lord of the Sabbath” (Matthew 12:8), a claim that shows him to be God. God created the Sabbath to commemorate his rest after the six days of creation. God established the Sabbath as a statue for Israel. God, and God alone, could rightly be called “Lord of the Sabbath.” But that is the title that Jesus claimed for himself. This week in Matthew 12:9–14 we will see that title vindicated as the Lord does good on the Sabbath. The Pharisees respond by plotting to kill Jesus for “working” on the Sabbath.
