Frank Murphy’s friend Erik Dobell is co-hosting today’s episode. Erik is a mentalist. His show, Impossibilities - Magic, Mind-Reading, and Mayhem! is in the Iris Theater at the Gatlinburg Space Needle. Get tickets at https://www.impossibilitiesshow.com
Frank is wearing another shirt he bought at an estate sale. Erik jokes that Frank might get misidentified by the son of the man whose shirt Frank is wearing. Erik once mistook another woman for his wife. He also approached a stranger’s car thinking it was his friend’s car. Frank often gets approached by strangers.
Frank took notice of his wife Jere’s receipt from Chick-fil-A. It had her full name and the make and color of her car in case she ever uses curbside pickup. Frank wondered what happens when Jere takes Frank’s car to Chick-fil-A.
Frank and Jere took their grandson Artie Rocket to see Erik’s magic show. Frank taught a mind-reading trick to Artie. Erik does a mind-reading trick in which he tells what wishes audience members wrote on slips of paper and placed in a fishbowl on stage.
Frank and his friend Victoria Henley recorded a See More Smokies episode at the Impossibilities show. Erik took Frank’s wedding ring and connected it to another man’s ring. Frank isn’t 100% positive that he got the right ring back.
Frank upgraded his wedding ring on the day of the O.J. Simpson slow-speed chase, June 17, 1994. Erik’s birthday is June 17. Frank worked at KROQ at the time. They did live broadcasts from outside the courthouse on the first and last days of the O.J. trial. KROQ sent redacted versions of the Kevin & Bean Show to the courthouse as entertainment for the jurors. Some other Los Angeles stations sent redacted tapes of their shows too. Frank received a thank-you letter from Judge Lance Ito.
Frank, Jere, and Artie rode the Moonshine Mountain Coaster both before and after they saw Erik’s magic show. When they rode in the afternoon, the manager Klaus urged them to come back for a night ride.
When Tennessee Shine Co. purchased and rebranded Moonshine Mountain Coaster, they hired Klaus away from Rocky Top Mountain Coaster and upgraded all the equipment. Frank and Erik wonder what upgrades may be coming to Ober Gatlinburg now that it has been purchased by some members of the Baker family, who created Ole Smoky Moonshine.
Frank’s grandsons are adept at using Amazon Alexa to play specific songs they want to hear. Frank doesn’t listen to music recreationally. He can’t help but analyze the way radio stations or online streaming services arrange their playlists. He turns up the radio when the deejay starts talking.
Instead of using the Roku box to watch television, Artie used the Xfinity Flex box because the remote has voice-control. The Xfinity box came with free Peacock, which allows Frank and Jere to watch Girls5eva. Artie watched prank videos and science experiment videos on YouTube.
Frank has started using “Hey Siri” because his wife gave him AirPods for his birthday. He uses an Irish Female voice for Siri. He tells it to fast-forward or rewind 30 seconds when listening to podcasts.
As a prank, Erik will go into stores and command their Alexa to play a hardcore rap song. Alexa’s “wake word” can be changed to “Computer” like on Star Trek: The Next Generation and some versions of Batman.
Frank’s dad bought a red phone for their house in the 1970s. Frank recalls that a former KROQ employee named Ralph Garman bought a replica of the Shakespeare bust from the ‘60s Batman series.
Erik has a Kit-Cat Klock in the lobby of his theater. Erik says the clock is in horror movies. Frank thinks that just the tail of the clock will be visible during the opening and closing segments that he and Victoria Henley recorded for the upcoming See More Smokies episode.
