(1 of 20) These are the adventures, perhaps the misadventures, of a man called Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, who was part of an expedition to conquer and colonise the gulf coast of North America, beginning in 1528. The initial aims of the expedition, however, soon changed drastically and Cabeza de Vaca’s account here changes from one of conquest and colonisation to one of survival, as he spent a total eight years in the gulf coast area, in Texas and Northern Mexico, before finding a way back to the Spanish-speaking world.
