As of January 2021, by the grace of God, life is almost back to normal. Although there are still some restrictions in the city, churches are actually coming together like before for worship with some precautions taken however, as NCF does not have their own church building, they had been asked to not come together for the months to come. Other than that, they were allowed to travel, conduct marriages and baptism. Except for being unable to come together for SUnday worship service, life is actually back to normal.
Back in 2020, things were different. Historically NCF has been a church with members of a thousand young people, young people from Northeast India studying at various colleges and seminaries. Almost all of them wanted to go home during the pandemic and those left could not even meet with each other. They needed a pass to leave their home and Pastor Pongom was privileged to have one. He was able to go and see some of the people who were in need, especially those going to difficult times because of hunger. At one point, only he, one of their church members and their driver was allowed to go around because of the relief work they were doing. Their relief operation grew far greater than Pastor Pongom ever anticipated even after he thought they didn’t have enough funds, being able to help around 20,000 to 25,000 people.
God’s work was clearly in this. Even though many people have suffered, many have lost their jobs and had to move back, some have even lost their job, the offerings to the church only increased, not decreased. Offerings are going up for the mission of God. God really shows up during difficult times and our faith increases as we see God’s work. As a church, they have experienced God’s presence together and God’s work in all these difficult times. They manage to make the changes they needed to continue to worship and do God’s work even during this pandemic, things that have been a problem before like not having a good camera or even just a keyboard were solved. The pandemic was like a blessing in disguise. People are becoming open to the presence of God in their life in a way that they were not able to before. It opened the door for Pastor Pongom and the others to minister, to serve and to pray for these people. And these people prayed with them, raised their hands together as they opened their hearts to God.
