The Salem Witch Trials were one of America's most tragic and imfamous periods in our country's history.
Starting in late 1692, over 200 people were accused of being witches. In that time period, the penelty for being a witch was death!
No one really knows with certainty how it all started, many records of the events were destroyed in an attempt to hide this dark moment in American History. Theories range from girl's playing make-believe and cruel jokes, domestic disputes between neighbors, and even contaminated bread with naturally occuring hallucinogenics.
What we do know is, in the end, 20 people were exicuted for the "crime" of witchcraft while 200 others were imprisioned.
