Ginger is a well-revered spice that has been used in food and medicine for many generations. It is often added to dishes not only for its exquisite flavour, but also in particular for its ability to aid digestion. Ginger is part of the same family as cardamom and turmeric, and the oil is extracted from the root of the plant. It has a warm, spicy, woody scent that is warming, relieving, recharging and stabilising.
Gingerol is one of the main components. This has amazing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, as well as antibacterial and antiseptic properties.
Ginger can be extracted in two ways. One is via steam distillation and the other is via CO2 extract. Interestingly, whilst both are ginger essential oil they look, smell and behave slightly differently.
CO2 extracted oils are gaining a lot of popularity now as they extract different chemical constituents that are not necessarily found in the steam distilled varieties, and do not use heat or a solvent.
Ginger that is CO2 extracted is a thicker more sticky liquid caused by a ketone molecule called Zingerone, which does not show up in steam-distilled ginger. It is still a warm, and pain-relieving oil with the added bonus of being an exceptional digestive aid. It also has a more accepted and familiar aroma.
The steam distilled ginger has more known sesquiterpenes (B-phellandrene and zingiberene) which are brilliant for pain relief. Both are amazing but if you wanted an essential oil for digestion issues like food poisoning, dysentery or gut dysbiosis then the CO2 extract would be the preferred choice.
Regardless of extraction, ginger on a whole is one of the best oils to help treat upset tummies and support better digestion. A massage blend with ginger, peppermint, fennel and grapefruit could be an ideal combination. These oils would also be ideal for nausea in a diffuser or aroma mist spritzer bottle. If travelling in a car you could use ginger and peppermint to help reduce symptoms of car-sickness.
When it comes to coughs, colds and removing a build up of mucous an inhalation would be ideal. Simply fill a sink or small bowl with warm to hot water, add 2 drops of ginger and 2 drops of peppermint. Place a towel over the head and inhale in through the nose and out through the mouth, then in through the mouth and out through the nose for at least a few minutes.
Zingibain is a component of ginger that has anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it an ideal choice for muscles aches and pains, arthritis and headaches.
Ginger is also renowned to help increase sexual desire. With aphrodisiac qualities it would blend well with oils like rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, orange and patchouli in a massage blend, romantic bath for two or a diffuser.
Over thousands of years there have been many healing tonics created using the power of ginger and still today it is used as a powerful stress and anxiety support. If there was a special oil to add to your health and healing collection, ginger would be it.
Ginger is warming, relieving, recharging and stabilising. It helps to feel more clarity, cleansed, confident, caourageous, endurance, motivation, sensuality, strength and transitioning.
