Hey team!
Today we are talking about the link between drug use (particularly substance abuse) and depression. According to Beyond Blue, over 500,000 Australians will experience depression and substance abuse at the same time, at some point in their lives. From 2016-19 in Australia, the use of illicit drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy all increased. In this episode we learn about how both substance use and mental health problems are risk factors for one another, how stimulant drugs and depressant drugs affect the likelihood of developing depression and how to help your friends and yourself.
**Trigger warning: these mental health episodes may be distressing for some listeners. There is mention of substance abuse and suicide in this episode. If this isn’t for you right now, maybe skip this one and come back when you feel ready. If you find yourself in need of help or support at any time, please call Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 or head to beyondblue.org.au to chat to someone online today.
