1) The Disciples and Jesus get into a boat. Suddenly, which means out of nowhere. A violent storm. Not a thunderstorm. A violent, outrageous storm. These are fishermen in the boat. They know what storms look like. They know which storms should shake them to their core. 2) How bad is this storm? Bad enough that the boat they are in is taking in water. A couple of key points: There is no coastguard. There are no cell phones. There is not a Jet Ski hanging on the side. They are going down. 3) Where’s Jesus? Sleeping. He kept on sleeping right through the storm. And that, my friends, is how we think that Jesus engages with us when we are being overwhelmed by storms, wind, waves, and life. 4) But the reality is that Jesus is close by. So close that when the Disciples start freaking out (and yes, they were freaking out), He responds. But He is not panicked like we get. He is calm, cool, and collected. Then he chastises them about too much fear and not enough faith.
