This week, we hear in the Christmas story about “wise men from the east,” traditionally called the Magi.  One Bible Dictionary describes them in this way:  ““Magi” originally referred to priests in Persia who were traditionally associated with secret wisdom, magic, and astrology.Why do you think these Magi are included in the story?  Matthew’s gospel in particular wants to emphasize Jesus as the fulfillment of the Israelite hopes for a Messiah, so why include priests from another religion?  What message does this send to us about the scope of Jesus’ coming?
