For the final episode of 2022, we're talking to Michael Veale, associate professor in digital regulations in the faculty of laws at UCL, about the Online Safety Bill.
We’ve wanted to talk about the online safety bill for a while now, not least because there’s some confusion as to what it actually is, and what it’s supposed to do.
On the one hand, its supporters say that it is a necessary intervention to ‘protect’ people from harmful online content - which can range from racism and misogyny, to pornography etc. Yet, the same supporters also insist that the OSB will enshrine freedom of speech. In fact, former tech minister Damian Collins even said this week, that the OSB is necessary to prevent people like Elon Musk from kicking off journalists critical of him.
