Therapeutic Thursdays: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery/Enhanced Surgical Recovery (C.E.)
The opioid epidemic continues to be problematic across the country with increases in deaths from addiction leading to overdose. In an effort to minimize use of opioids postoperatively, the ERAS society developed guidelines and protocols pre-,intra-, and postoperatively to enhance recovery from surgical procedures while limiting use of opioids. Pharmacists play an integral part in the development of individual hospital protocols for ERAS, monitoring patients postoperatively, and preparing appropriate and individualized regimens for pain management on discharge.
