US sharemarkets were mixed on Thursday. Facebook parent Meta Platform's shares soared 24% - the most since 2013 - after reporting a fourth quarter beat on revenue and announcing a US$40 billion share buyback. Shares of Google parent Alphabet, Amazon.com and Apple rose by up to 5.8% ahead of their quarterly results. But shares of drugmaker Merck slid 3.5% on a lower-than-expected annual forecast. Around an hour before the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was down 252 points or 0.7%. But the S&P 500 index gained 0.7% and the Nasdaq index added 247 points or 2.1%.
