A) Jesus tells the people that He is there to help those who are sick. There’s a lot of confusion that surrounds this. So let’s make it absolutely clear. He’s not talking about those who are sick from sin because that’s everybody. He’s talking about those who could recognize that they’re sick from sin. In other words, he’s not dealing with the people who are in denial about their iniquities. He’s dealing with people who are being honest about it.
B) Jesus then says I desire mercy, not sacrifice. What He’s really communicating is what the purpose of the law is. The depth of the law is not the fulfillment of sacrificial obligation as much as the spirit of the law crying out for godly righteousness.
