This first in a series of sermons looks at what the gospel of Jesus Christ has to say about global wealth. While Pastor Phil Kniss begins with the premise that the gospel does speak to pressing issues in our world today, he also states that he will not be giving any definitive answers. Instead, we are invited to listen to what the Bible is speaking into our world.
The Bible has a lot to say about global wealth, and especially about the poor of this world. Isaiah 58:1-9 speaks of God wanting his people to bring justice to the poor. Luke 16:19-31 tells the story of Lazarus and the rich man, who both die. The story clearly shows God's compassion for the poor and the importance of heeding the Bible's call to God's people to care for the poor.
Pastor Phil presented a challenge to us. We are to eat, pray, and love according to God's priorities. With statistics about the toll poverty exacts on the world's population, we are reminded of how we are needed to work for the poor. It should not be an option for Christians to ignore this.
