Like the ancient Stoics, we value self-sufficiency as one of the cardinal virtues. We value making our own way in life and we teach our children to be self-reliant. This is a good thing. But when it comes to the theological realm, self-sufficiency runs against the grain of biblical revelation. It does not work when it comes to our relationship with God.
