Julia Scotti is a seasoned comedian, actress, and writer who has been performing on stage for over three decades. Born in New Jersey in 1952, Julia began her career as a comedian in the 1980s under the name Rick Scotti. She quickly gained popularity and became a regular performer at renowned comedy clubs such as The original Improv.
In 2000, Julia decided to retire from comedy and focus on her family life. However, after 10 years away from the stage, she made a triumphant comeback in 2014, this time as a transgender woman. Her heartfelt and hilarious comedy routines on her journey through gender transition quickly earned her national recognition, including being a quarter finalist on the popular TV show "America's Got Talent" in 2016.
In addition to her stand-up comedy, Julia is also the subject of the documentary "Julia Scotti: Funny That Way", which chronicles her life and career as a transgender comedian. The film premiered at the prestigious South by Southwest Film Festival in 2020 and has since garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards at film festivals around the world.
Julia's comedy is known for its honesty and vulnerability, often tackling sensitive topics such as LGBTQ+ issues and mental health with humor and grace. Her appearance on Dystopia Tonight was an hour of hilarious, thought-provoking conversation about life, comedy, and the state of the world today.
