One of my favourite mixes is Ritchie Hawtin’s DE9 Closer to the Edit. DE9 refers to the equipment he used; essentially two Decks, Effects and a 909 unit. He brilliantly chops up hundreds of tracks into a kinetic, beat orientated mix.
I’ve often wondered what the underlying tracks were like..
So last weekend I hunted a good proportion of them down, and created my own mix. I’ve taken a different approach though - I wanted to stay away from Hawtin’s technique (as he does it so well!) - instead i’ve tried to take the opposite direction - no decks, no effects, no 909. The mix is created live on my DDJ controller & Rekordbox using only volume faders and minimal EQ - no additional samples or overlays used.
Many of the tracks have bpm drift and the phasing of tracks is a challenge too given how repetitive some are. Anyway, here it is - enjoy!
