Season 3, Episode 32: Caring Nurse or Cunning Serial Killer: How One Woman Caused a Wave of Grief in Two Texas Towns
If you’re a parent, you know that there’s nothing worse than having a sick child. Colds and flus are bad enough, but have you ever had to rush your child to the emergency room? I have and it was awful. But it was such a relief to know that she was with people who knew how to help her. People who cared about saving lives. Well, I assumed that all the medical personnel helping my daughter wanted to save her life. But what if they didn’t?
Our book this week is “Killer Nurse: Life of Serial Killer Genene Ann Jones” and our guest is Tina Yeager, licensed mental health counselor, life coach, speaker, and author. We’ll take a deep dive into trying to understand how a trusted healthcare professional could turn out to be a predator AND how we can be there for people dealing with grief when tragedy strikes their family.
Our Bible passage this week is Philippians 2:3-4: “Don't do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble toward one another, always considering others better than yourselves. And look out for one another's interests, not just for your own.”
Today’s practical action step is about making a mindset change. Too often we place our trust in titles rather than character. Most doctors and nurses are very good at what they do and have a strong desire to help people. Please hear me say that. But some are in it for what they can get out of it - money, prestige, power, or whatever. Don’t be afraid to ask medical personnel questions and if their attitude isn’t that of someone who is more interested in YOUR welfare than their own, find another practitioner if you can. Staying safe extends to being cautious of the medical professional we let care for us.
