Fighting For Free Speech On The Air: National Religious Broadcasters’ Never-Ending Battle To Keep Christian Messaging Alive In The Media
The National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) have been fighting for Christian’s right to free speech since 1944. They support Christian media in radio, TV, podcasts, theater, and internet ministries.
In this week’s podcast, I sat down for a special interview with Troy Miller, President & CEO of NRB.
I asked Troy what it entails to monitor what hundreds of government bureaucrats are doing to censor Christian speech on radio and TV.
He said, “Well, there’s some major legislation that has caused the most problems for Christian broadcasters and even churches, in general… It’s the Johnson Amendment. This Amendment limits Christian non-profit organizations from engaging in the political arena or political candidacy… If you do, you can lose your tax-exempt status… But it’s also had an effect on churches. That’s why you don’t see too many pastors getting political behind the pulpit… They are afraid of losing their tax-exempt status—But they’re misinformed. Churches are protected by the Constitution so that they wouldn’t lose their tax exemption…. So, they can and should talk about political issues that affect the church or challenge our beliefs.”
Anyone listening to this insightful podcast will benefit from what Troy Miller has to say.
