Questions for Revelation: Chapters 4–5
Summary of last week’s class:
Chapter 3 rounds out the message to the seven churches. Jesus rebukes and praises the churches in relation to their faithfulness or lack thereof. The church at Sardis (3:1-6) needed to strengthen what they had remaining. Some in Sardis had not given in to the spiritual lethargy that was taking over the church. Jesus promised that those who overcame would be clothed in white and their name would be confessed before the heavenly Father.
The church at Philadelphia (3:7-13) does not have anything negative said about them. Jesus encouraged them to hold on even in the midst of persecution and they would be vindicated. He would write the name of God on them, and they would be a pillar in God’s temple. The church at Laodicea (3:14-22) has nothing positive said about them. They were spiritually lukewarm and needed to repent. Jesus rebukes those who he loves and holds out a final reward for the church at Laodicea if they repented and regained their spiritual zeal. The seven churches are challenged to hold firm to their faith, get rid of sin and things that are holding them back from complete faithfulness to the Lord. Jesus is in the midst of the church and aware of her activities. Jesus sees the suffering, compromising, the remnant, and the faithful. These letters remind us that Jesus is watching, will he be pleased with what he sees in us?
This week we will study chapters 4-5 together. Read both of these chapters. From this point on in the book of Revelation there will be a lot of symbolic language, do not be intimidated or overwhelmed or discouraged. Just remember in Christ you’re a winner no matter how it’s described in this book!
