Gospel Of Mark | Part 16 | Pastor Jon Adams
"They honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” Jesus famously quoted these words in one of his classic rebukes of the Pharisees. The Pharisees were hypocrites. Their entire approach to God was wrong.
While we don’t encounter Pharisees today, the problem of hypocrisy lives on, not just in our world, but in the church as well. It seems like you can’t go a week without reading about a church leader who’s been exposed for something. It’s a problem in the church today. People still “honor God with their lips, but their hearts are far from him.”
But let’s be honest -- it’s not just a problem with church leaders. All of us who follow Christ are prone to hypocrisy. We all sometimes try to present a better version of ourselves than the real us. So how does Jesus encourage his followers to avoid the age-old trap of the Pharisees?
This week, we’ll look at Mark 7:1-23, and we’ll see Jesus respond to his opponents and teach his followers how to overcome hypocrisy in their lives.
