MSU Deep Dive Season Preview 2023-24

October 19, 2023: Prior to last season, Michigan State had two straight disappointing years (by program standards) with teams that had early exits in the NCAA and not in contention for Big Ten titles. However, last year finished better with a Sweet Sixteen berth and almost an elite eight appearance. The season might have ended with a thrilling and heartbreaking OT loss to Kansas St. but it gave all Spartan fans reasons for optimism heading into 2023.

There are a lot of reasons for that optimism. First, the seasons obviously ended on an up note with a semi-deep run in the NCAA tourney. Second, almost the entire roster from last year is returning aside from Joey Hauser. Finally, MSU is adding a top 5 recruiting class that highlights two McDonald All-Americans and a freak athlete.

Last year the Spartans were not a typical MSU team. They played at a snail's pace, couldn't offensive rebound, and rarely scored (or tried) in transition. We expect all those factors to be reversed this season with improved quality of depth, experience, and athleticism. It isn't hard to see all sorts of reasons why this team might be very special.
