WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 25, 2023
- Hurricane Otis came inland near Acapulco, Mexico as a Category Five storm overnight producing peak wind speeds prior to landfall of 165 mph and confirmed speeds of 150 mph by the government of Mexico; widespread damage resulted
- Frost was noted this morning in Victoria, Australia this morning with very little permanent crop damage suspected. Freezes did occur in the higher elevated areas
- Victoria and southern New South Wales, Australia will be impacted by more widespread frost and a few light freezes Thursday morning that may negatively impact a few reproducing winter crops like wheat, barley and canola
- Rain fell significantly in central and west Texas cotton areas overnight where 1.00 to 3.53 inches of rain resulted in portions of the Rolling Plains and in a small part of the High and Low Plains; damage to the crop should not be very great, although fiber quality may have decreased
- ECMWF model reduced rain in center west Brazil for days 7-10 today relative to the past few days. That model has been too wet most of this week so far, but this change was a step in the right direction
- Second week rainfall increases are expected in center west Brazil, but it may take a while for a good distribution of “significant” rain to fall
- Hot temperatures and no rain again impacted center west Brazil Tuesday and that trend will prevail through the weekend and into next week, although a few showers will pop up periodically
- Not many other changes were noted in the world overnight
- Europe will remain wet except in the southeast where the lower Danube River Basin remains too dry
- Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region will receive significant rain over the next week to ten days
- China and India weather looks quite favorable
- Southern Indonesia remains drier than usual, but a few more showers and thunderstorms are possible periodically
- Eastern South Africa will get some rain for summer crop planting late this weekend into next week
- Argentina will see some periodic showers that will help maintain status quo conditions after recent rain improved soil moisture
- Interior southern Brazil and southern Paraguay will become excessively wet this weekend into next week resulting in flooding
- Bitter cold will drop through western Canada to the U.S. Plains
- Freezes will reach West Texas cotton areas early next week to help defoliate crops
- Snow, cold rain and falling temperatures in the northern U.S. Plains will stress livestock and delay travel
- Western Australia will remain too dry for reproducing and filling crops
