Today's is December 6th, on today's show:
**I like to start the show with the word of the day & quote of the day. A LITTLE ENCOURAGEMENT IN A WORLD OF HATE, Let's go!
Today's word of the day is " supportive "
//: providing encouragement or emotional help
**Quote of the day:
"Sometimes we need someone to simply be there. Not to fix anything, or not to do anything in particular, but just to let us feel that we are cared and supported. "
"People don't always need advice. Sometimes all they really need is a hand to hold, an er to listen, and a heart to understand them."
"You don't need a reason to help people."
ARE YOU A SUPPORTIVE PERSON?
When you are struggling in life, all you want is to not feel alone and have is a supportive ear or shoulder pad to cry on. Being supportive comes in many different forms, just like the relationships that might need it.
Being supportive means being kind and helpful to someone during a difficult or unhappy time in their life.
It involves offering genuine encouragement, reassurance, and compassion with an open mind an no judgement.
Having a supportive friend or group that builds people up during times of stress, gives them the strength to get through whatever they might be dealing with so they can thrive.
Once again, we are all different and need different types of support at different times in our lives. Some of us lean more towards certain types of support.
It helps to know what type of support is needed in the situation/person. Example: Giving someone advice when what they really want and need is someone to just listen, can come across as invalidating.
So learn to ASK for what type of support you need. You might start the conversation by saying something like, " I just need to vent - do you have any time? It is not fair to think people can read your mind and know what you might need.
You might need an empathic friend to talk too. Or you might actually need advice. Or even speaking to a therapist or life coach is different.
- Sometimes we need someone to show us care and compassion
- Other times we need someone to hype us up
- We need advice or a person who can take action and literally help us with something we can't do on our own.
Knowing you have the support of others and having people you can count on can help shield you from stress and protect your emotional and physical well-being.
Remember to keep in mind that there is no "one" way to be supportive, but there are a few tips you can start with if you are supportive challenged:
- Learn to leave your opinions at the door - It is normal to have "opinions" about others. But when someone comes to you for support, it is best to zip it, open your ears and have a nice pair of shoulder pads on! Of course if they want your advice, that is a different story, otherwise close your mouth!
- A very valuable skill to master is active/empathetic listener - Really listen. Maintain eye contact while they are speaking to you. Avoid interrupting. Paraphrase what they shared and repeat it back to them so to clarify what you have heard. (I had a therapist teach me that one.)
- If you do not know how to support that person in their situation, try asking them what they might need from you.
Sometimes all we need is someone to acknowledge the existence of our suffering to feel better. We want someone to try to understand our feelings even if they don't necessarily agree with them.
More often than not we turn to someone as a sounding board rather than advice. But, too often we skip this essential step of being supportive and dive straight into problem-solving.
Remember, offering emotional support typically involves asking questions, listening and then providing validation and the type of support a person needs. It is important to be patient, understanding, and non-judgmental.
YOU GOT THIS!! I BELIEVE IN YOU!

*Bubble tea is around 40 years old
Cheerful-sounding bubble tea—also called pearl milk tea, boba milk tea, or just boba—is tea mixed with milk or fruit and topped with tapioca pearls. According to the tea gurus at Kung Fu Tea, a franchise chain with more than 250 locations around the United States, boba was invented in Taiwan during the decade of big hair, neon leg warmers, and a dozen John Hughes movies: the ’80s. By the early ’90s, boba made its way to North America.
