**I like to start the show with the word of the day & quote of the day. A LITTLE ENCOURAGEMENT IN A WORLD OF HATE, Let's go!
Today's word of the day is " self-con·trol "
//: the ability to control oneself, in particular one's emotions and desires or the expression of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations:
**Quote of the day:
"If you can learn self-control you can master anything." -
"When you can't control what's happening, challenge yourself to control the way you respond to what's happening. That's where your power is."
What does it mean to have self-control?
Self-control means the ability to restrain or control one's own impulses, emotions, or desires.
Self-control is the ability to control and change the way you will respond to avoid undesirable behaviors while increasing desired ones. It also helps us to be able to achieve long-term goals.
When I was doing the research for this word self-control I started reading about some that believe that self-control is determined by your genetics, wait what??!!! But can also be a skill you can strengthen with practice, that I believe. Sure you can LEARN or be TAUGHT something because you are around people all the time. You are who you hang out with 100%. YOU ultimately decide on what distractions enter your life. BUT I also believe that we as humans use anything as an excuse for poor behavior and poor choices. The fact that either you grew up in a household that did not teach self-control or you hang out with people who have none, your behavior and responses are that yours. So learn to have a little more self-control.
When we are stressed, self-control tends to fly out the window.
So understanding how to practice self-control begins with understanding yourself. By looking deeply into yourself, taking responsibility for yourself, and taking the steps to improve destructive aspects of your life is the first step because the personal triggers we all have can make us sabotage or efforts and quit.
Did you know there is a muscle in your brain designed to strengthen your self-control? The prefrontal cortex gets the brain to focus and still itself. If you're fatigued or lack sleep, the cortex is prone to a loss of self-control. Being that this portion of the brain manages emotions and behaviors, even the slightest fatigue can cause a drastic loss of this skill.
You can exercise this frontal cortex by playing memory games and improving your basic math skills.
When you exercise self-control, especially in a difficult situation, you send a message to the world and more importantly to yourself, that you care enough to take responsibility for yourself. And the more you exercise self-control by practicing self-control the sooner self-control will become a permanent lifestyle change.
I am going to leave you with one last quote:
"Self-control is strength. Calmness is mastery. You have to get to a point where your mood doesn't shift based on the insignificant actions of someone else. Don't allow others to control the direction of your life. Don't allow your emotions to empower your intelligence. "
You got this. I believe in you!!
